9 Fantasy Baseball Books That Will Help You Win in 2022

If you’re gonna be a nerd you might as well do it right! Here are 9 Fantasy Baseball Books to help you win your leagues in 2021 and beyond!

Books? We don’t need no stinking books! At least that’s what a lot of people think. In reality, fantasy baseball managers are probably a bit above the current era of instant gratification. We realize that fantasy baseball takes a level of research and preparation that no other fantasy sport can match. But to be honest, most of us just enjoy immersing ourselves completely in the game we love. With that in mind, here are my nine favorite fantasy baseball books that can help you win in 2021… and beyond…

The fantasy baseball books below contain affiliate links, which means Fantasy Sports Resource will get a small portion of any purchases you make. You pay the same price, and we get help keeping the site afloat… or maybe a beer to reward us for our work.

If you want to skip the previews and get right to the basics, here are the links to my 9 favorite fantasy baseball books. They are in no particular order. If you want to learn a bit more before you buy, then continue on below.

9 Fantasy Baseball Books for 2022

Ron Shandler’s Baseball Forecaster

2022 Baseball Forecaster (1)

Amazon Description: The industry’s longest-running publication for baseball analysts and fantasy leaguers, Ron Shandler’s Baseball Forecaster, published annually since 1986, is the first book to approach prognostication by breaking performance down into its component parts.

Rather than predicting batting average, for instance, this resource looks at the elements of skill that make up any given batter’s ability to distinguish between balls and strikes, his propensity to make contact with the ball, and what happens when he makes contact—reverse engineering those skills back into batting average.

The result is an unparalleled forecast of baseball abilities and trends for the upcoming season and beyond.

My Take: No list about the top fantasy baseball books would be complete without this one. If you like diving in deep and dissecting every player, then the Baseball Forecaster will provide you with months of enjoyment. The sheer volume of data is immense and it will undoubtedly help give you a much better understanding of the underlying numbers that lead to success (and failure) in both real baseball and fantasy.

Baseball Prospectus 2022

2022 Baseball Prospectus

Amazon Description: PLAY BALL! The 27th edition of this industry-leading baseball annual contains all of the important statistics, player predictions and insider-level commentary that readers have come to expect, along with significant improvements to several statistics that were created by, and are exclusive to, Baseball Prospectus, and an expanded focus on international players and teams.

Baseball Prospectus 2022 provides fantasy players and insiders alike with prescient PECOTA projections, which The New York Times called “the überforecast of every player’s performance.”

With more than 50 Baseball Prospectus alumni currently working for major-league baseball teams, nearly every organization has sought the advice of current or former BP analysts, and readers of Baseball Prospectus 2022 will understand why!

My Take: Much like BaseballHQ above, Baseball Prospectus has built its own culture, and if you enjoy their website and everything it has to offer, then The Baseball Prospectus is the book for you.

Winning Fantasy Baseball: Secret Strategies of a Nine-Time National Champion

Winning Fantasy Baseball Books

Amazon Description: In Winning Fantasy Baseball, Larry Schechter discloses the secrets of his proven methods. Packed with commonsense, easy-to-use strategies for beginners through experienced players, Schechter supplies readers with a toolkit to achieve the most important thing in fantasy ball–winning!

Some have called Schechter one of the best fantasy baseball players in the world. He is a two-time winner of the CDM Sports national salary-cap challenge, having defeated 7,500 competitors in 2002 and 6,000 in 2005. He is also a six-time winner of the renowned Tout Wars experts league and a one-time winner of the USA Today-sponsored League of Alternative Baseball Reality (LABR).

Readers will learn directly from the champ everything they need to know about:
– how to project player stats;
– how to convert those stats into a specific value;
– strategy for snake drafts, and mono-league and mixed auctions;
– selecting teams using a salary cap;
– playing in keeper leagues;
– and performing in-season management.

My Take: This is one of my favorite fantasy baseball books of all time. Instead of diving into stats and player evaluations like we see so often, Winning Fantasy Baseball dives deeper into the gameplay of fantasy baseball. Each year the players we draft change, but the strategies and philosophy covered in this book will have you winning leagues on an annual basis. The focus on fantasy baseball strategy is also a refreshing break from the statistical overload we are bombarded with on most fantasy sites.

The Process – 2021 Edition: Integrating Valuations and Biases into a Winning Fantasy Baseball Formula

2022 The ProcessAmazon Description: The Process – Integrating Valuations and Biases into a Winning Fantasy Baseball Formula (thefantasybaseballprocess.com) is written by Jeff Zimmerman (Rotographs, Launch Angle podcast, three-time Tout Wars champion) and Tanner Bell (TGFBI overall champion, SmartFantasyBaseball.com, author of Using Standing Gain Points to Rank and Value Fantasy Baseball Players).

This year’s edition of The Process contains the same core of the book that’s been around since 2019, with updates to much of the research for the results of the 2021 season. This edition also includes a foreword by the great Phil Dussault, fresh off his amazing 2021 season, as well as our unique analysis of Phil’s strategies.

Among other things, there are new sections describing the in-season spreadsheet tools we use to co-manage teams, updates to the in-season tools we use, an eye-opening study about the accuracy of two-start pitcher schedules, and a new section about how to attempt to make serious money playing fantasy baseball. A detailed listing of changes to the book can be found at thefantasybaseballprocess.com. In addition, we have reread, revisited, and reconsidered the entire book. This led to streamlining sections, adding clarification, and rewording confusing explanations.
The appendix is updated for various leagues’ standings, updated standings gains points (SGP) for the 2021 season, 2022 Steamer projections with the SGP calculations, projected handedness splits, and others. We’ve added a new appendix that lists players you might expect to exceed projections based on certain “projection altering” characteristics like pitch mix and sprint speed changes.

My Take: As the title implies The Process is all about what it takes to create a winning fantasy baseball team. While Tanner and Jeff create a new edition with new data every season, the principles discussed within are pretty timeless. Along with solid strategy they provide plenty of data to help you evaluate players and build a team that will be a championship contender.

How to Value Players for Rotisserie Baseball

Art McGee fantasy baseball books

Amazon Description: How to Value Players for Rotisserie Baseball will teach readers how to calculate the best player values for their draft or auction. Art McGee applies concepts from economics, finance, and statistics to develop a pricing method that far surpasses any other published. His method is highly sophisticated, yet McGee explains it in terms that any fantasy baseball owner can understand and apply. In this new Second Edition readers will learn how to adjust values for position scarcity, injury risk and future potential, set up their own pricing spreadsheet, and make better decisions on trades, free agents, and long-term contracts.

My take: This one is an oldie but a goodie, but I’ll give you fair warning. It is very intense. It involves some serious higher-level thinking and is gonna require quite a bit of time to put to use. If you play in rotisserie-style auctions though, there’s no better book to buy in order to learn about the intricacies of player valuation.

Using Standings Gain Points to Rank and Value Fantasy Baseball Players: A Step-by-Step Guide Using Microsoft Excel

Standings Gains Points

Amazon Description: This instructional guide is written specifically for rotisserie fantasy baseball players looking to create customized player rankings and calculate custom dollar values for their own league.

This book includes highly detailed step-by-step instructions with over 200 screenshots outlining exactly how to set up spreadsheets, where to download projections, exact formulas to be used, and links to actual example Excel files to download every step of the way.

My take: Tanner Bell, who if you noticed above, also co-rites The Process, is the founder of SmartFantasyBaseball.com. While he doesn’t do a ton of player analysis or deep statistical dives, he’s done as much as anyone to enable fantasy managers to up their game. Seriously, if you know baseball and incorporate his tools, you can be your own expert. This takes much of what Art McGee and a few other pioneers have done with player valuation and makes it doable for the rest of us.

How to Rank and Value Fantasy Baseball Players for Points Leagues: A Step-by-Step Guide Using Microsoft Excel

Points League Fantasy Books

“How to Rank and Value Fantasy Baseball Players for Points Leagues” is the second instructional fantasy baseball book written by Tanner Bell, author of the SmartFantasyBaseball.com blog.

This book includes highly detailed step-by-step instructions with over 200 screenshots outlining exactly how to set up spreadsheets, where to download projections, exact formulas to be used, and links to actual example Excel files to download every step of the way.

My take: I’m not gonna keep gushing over how much I like the tools and information that Tanner provides. Here’s the last thing I’ll say about it. While most every other fantasy analysts are telling you how smart and great they are, Tanner is providing you with the tools and information to tell everyone else how smart and great YOU are… and be spot on.
